Shedding light!

The exposed trusses of our new house.

My husband and I are busy building a house in a security estate called Digteby in Stellenbosch.

Comparably its not a

very big house – standard with 3 beds, 3 baths and the necessary entertainment areas – carefully planned spaces to fit our cramped budget.

Traditional ceilings will be replaced by exposed trusses painted white to give the feeling of space.  I am currently busy with “OPERATION LIGHTING”, and because I have a full time job and a toddler at home I do not have the time to browse lighting shops all over Cape Town for hours on end.

I am a firm believer that one’s home should tell a story of your life, where you come from and where you have traveled.  It should be a space where you can cultivate creativity, where you feel calm and can relax – just as Design Sponge shows the home of Karen Shavit which inspires me tremendously!

Back to lighting…  I have found the following lovely pieces at Weylandts (on the website off course – given the fact that time is limited), the first is a beautiful white and wood pendant for focused lighting above my kitchen island on Weylandts website.

The second light is a hanging lamp in the shape of a flower and made from rattan.  It is for above my staircase, something a little more showy, but still keeping to my style of simple elegance.

I am still trying to decide between the following two pendants for the main bedroom.  My furniture is quite lush, and I am leaning towards a simple design once again.  It is either a pendant similar to that of the cup pendant for the kitchen island, a little larger white and wood funnel pendant.  OR, the other option is a wooden hanging lamp which I spotted in Fidders, Stellebosch.

I am still looking for a dramatic chandelier for the dining room, and am considering the beautifulTeardrop ceramic beaded chandelier from Hellooow Handmande.  I also found a picture of one of these in the TUIS (HOME) magazine last year some time, and had great fun browsing their website.

Any other suggestions?

New beginnings

Its the start of a new year and I am not letting my good intentions grow stale.  I have long dreamed of having my own business in a creative interior industry (I am a winemaker by profession), but it is not possible now for various reasons… I have thus decided that untill the day the door opens for my own business I will start planning it and dreaming about it in the mean time – all the while letting everyone in on my thoughts, findings and ideas!

My passion is creating beautiful interiors, whether it be by creating striking pieces of furniture yourself or by putting things together to make a harmony and a pretty picture.  I especially adore good pieces of furniture.

Herewith then a picture of a simple lamp which I made over two years ago.  It is a reading/standing lamp (currently standing in my mother’s home) made from copper and wood.  its not very high and perfect for putting over a comfy chair for reading, knitting or whatever one can do on your lap!

Creative diy lighting

I was very inspired when I recently visited Melissa’s in Stellenbosch. They sell beautiful hand made baskets amongst all their other hand made pretty things. I thought these baskets could actually double up as hanging lights when turned upside down while providing great atmosphere with the interesting light patterns it would let through.
